Dr Yeo Zhi Quan

Deputy Group Manager, Sustainability and Life Cycle Engineering
Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech)

Dr Yeo Zhiquan is the Deputy Group Manager of the Sustainability and Life Cycle Management Group at A*STAR SIMTech and concurrently oversees a research section in the academic discipline of Industrial Ecology. Over the past ten years, he has been actively involved in industry and research projects for progressing industrial sustainability, ranging from Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies to data science applications that enable industrial symbiosis and circular economy activities. Zhiquan was also involved in knowledge transfer activities to the industry through developing and conducting carbon footprint assessment courses. He was also one of the co-developers of SIMTech’s first carbon footprint assessment software tailored for industry users.

Zhiquan joined SIMTech in 2009 after obtaining his Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the National University of Singapore. Having a strong interest in environmental sustainability, he started his career under SIMTech’s Sustainability and Technology Assessment section. Zhiquan participated in a wide range of LCA projects with various industries, where he gained understanding and insights to the sustainability challenges faced by the industry. He also carried out research in the area of LCA computational structure and efficient techniques. Leveraging his experience on LCA, he translated his knowledge into carbon footprint assessment course curriculum and software for the industry.

Further pursuing his interest in sustainability, Zhiquan undertook an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) degree at the University of Warwick on an A*STAR scholarship, where he worked on the topic of Industrial Symbiosis – seeking out opportunities to enable the notion of “one man’s waste is another man’s treasure” at the industrial scale. During his EngD, he investigated the opportunities for melding artificial intelligence technologies with sustainability. Through this work, he developed an artificial intelligence assisted approach that enables the discovery of knowledge from patent documents and scientific journals to support Industrial Symbiosis activities.
