Energy Transition in the Lead-up to COP28

As two of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of climate change and with regional energy demand projected to increase nearly three-fold by 2050, South and Southeast Asia need innovative and affordable technology solutions to facilitate an expedited energy transition towards net-zero and decarbonization targets. OECD states—with cutting-edge technologies, business know-how, and funding capacities—are in a unique position to serve as technology and trade partners in the regional energy transition. COP28 offers a platform to establish partnerships between OECD economies and emerging markets of South and Southeast Asia to meet this need.

In hopes of stimulating the formation of these partnerships and accelerating the deployment of clean energy technology in the region, the Atlantic Council and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ) will hold a roundtable discussion at Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) to discuss the region’s perspective on how the South and Southeast Asian energy transition should be addressed at COP28, with particular attention to the central question: “How can the COP28 platform be best leveraged to strengthen cooperation with key technology providers and set the region on track for meeting its decarbonization and net-zero targets?”
