SIEW TechTable are sessions designed to explore emerging and nascent low carbon technologies that will accelerate the energy transition.

The SIEW TechTable sessions are moderated by Landon Derentz, Senior Director, Atlantic Council

Session

Ralph Foong, Deputy Chief Executive, Energy Market Authority of Singapore

Presented by:

Akilur Rahman, Market Innovation Lead - South Asia & Chief Technology Officer - India, Hitachi Energy

Energy transition with accelerated shift to variable renewable power generation and growing electrification in transportation, industry and building sectors is making the power grid more and more complex. At the same time, prosumers are expecting the grid to be more reliable, flexible and resilient for round the clock availability of clean energy. Technologies such as HVDC (conventional, multi-terminal, meshed), green hydrogen power, energy storage (BESS, Hydrogen Fuel based – stationary and V2G), faster EV charging, dynamic reactive compensation (STATCOM), DERMS, Microgrid, etc. are going to play increasingly important role in making the grid smarter and intelligent. The key would be to integrate all these core technologies together with digital technologies such as data science, AI-ML, AR-VR, digital twin, cyber security, etc. for future of energy system of systems. This session will address the approach of co-innovation and co-creation in the technologies to achieve the goals.

Presented by:

Dr Avishek Kumar, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, VFlowTech

In the pursuit of a sustainable and carbon-neutral future, long-duration energy storage technologies are emerging as a cornerstone of the global effort to achieve net-zero emissions. This presentation delves into the transformative potential of flow battery technology in driving the transition to a net-zero world - the unique attributes of flow batteries, their capacity for long-duration energy storage, and their role in mitigating the intermittency challenges of renewable energy sources. By exploring real-world applications and success stories, this talk will underscore how flow battery technology is reshaping energy landscapes, bolstering grid stability, and facilitating the integration of renewables.

Justin Oettmeier, Vice President of Technical Development, Asia Pacific, ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions

ExxonMobil will discuss the role CCS can play in helping to reduce global CO2 emissions, particularly for the hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as power generation and the petrochemical, steel and cement industries. The presentation will highlight how CCS hubs and new technologies across the value chain can accelerate the pace and scale of decarbonisation and help industry reduce emissions.  In addition, ExxonMobil will highlight the opportunities and challenges associated with implementing a cross border CCS value chain which will be a key enabler for the Asia Pacific region.

Dr Marit Brommer, Chief Executive Officer, International Geothermal Association

Henri Paillere, Head of Planning and Economic Studies Section, International Atomic Energy Agency

Nuclear power is increasingly seen as an indispensable part of future low-carbon energy systems, able to support the integration of large shares of variable renewables by providing reliable and dispatchable power. Presentation by Dr Henri Pailliere, highlighting how nuclear power could support net zero transitions.

Jan Holm, Executive Vice President, Seaborg Technologies
