Decarbonising Asia through a Connected Power Grid and Regional Energy Markets

As Asia advances its energy transition, the focus is increasingly shifting from national efforts to regional collaboration. A more connected power system across the region can enable more efficient use of energy resources, improve system resilience, and support the scaling of low-carbon electricity.

The ASEAN Power Grid (APG) represents an important step in this direction, providing a foundation for greater cross-border electricity trade and stronger regional interconnection. Alongside physical infrastructure, market mechanisms such as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and cross-border trading arrangements are playing a growing role in supporting investment and enabling access to low-carbon electricity across borders.

As these developments progress, the key challenge is how to better align infrastructure, markets, and investment frameworks to support a more integrated regional approach to decarbonisation.
