Session 4: Beyond the Cable: What Will It Take to Build a Sustainable ASEAN Power Market?

As ASEAN advances the development of the ASEAN Power Grid, attention is increasingly shifting from physical infrastructure to the commercial and market frameworks needed to support cross-border electricity trade. While significant investment will be required to develop new interconnectors, their long-term success will depend on how they are utilised, operated on a commercially viable basis, and integrated into regional electricity markets.

This panel brings together industry leaders to discuss the commercial and market arrangements that can support investments in interconnectors, facilitate regional power trading, and strengthen energy security across ASEAN. What lessons can be drawn from more mature electricity markets, and how can ASEAN develop market frameworks that balance efficiency, investment certainty, and regional cooperation? As regional electricity trade expands, how should access to cross-border transmission capacity be managed to encourage efficient utilisation and investment? What lessons can ASEAN draw from international experience, including emerging approaches such as capacity auctions?

Session 5: China's Oil & Petrochemical Market Outlook

Representing the CNPC Economics and Technology Research Institute (a national high-end think tank), the speaker will review how China has responded to the historic oil supply disruption in the Strait of Hormuz since the Middle East conflict in late February this year, providing insights into the ongoing impact of the conflict developments on the global oil market. The session will also explore outlook for China’s oil consumption over the next five years. It is projected that China’s electrification will speed up fossil fuel replacement in the next five years: major refined oil product consumption will edge down, whereas demand for petrochemical feedstock oil will grow steadily.
